Laser removal of traumatic tattoos - secondary to explosive injury

26 October, 2011

Traumatic tattoos occur as a result of particle of carbon imbedded in the deeper layers of the skin. This may be due to an explosion (bombs in the military setting, or airbag injuries), or due to road accidents.

The same principles apply to removal of traumatic tattoos as do tattoos from ink. Multiple treatment sessions are required, however the results are generally excellent. If large fragments of carbon are noted, your Specialist may recommend punch excision, a surgical method of removing larger fragments.

Dr Davin Lim has been involved with Army in treating explosive injuries recently seen in our troops in Iraq.
